You Promised Me A Rose Garden Print

£55.00

This is Captain Costentenus – A Greek Albanian who travelled to China in 1867 on a mining expedition with two companions. A rebellion arose and they were all taken prisoner and subjected to a 3 month tattooing session as punishment!

One day a stranger appeared and took pity on the tattooed man and gave him a magical rose head garland to make him feel better. His jealous friends thought they were promised a rose garden too but one just got a daffodil…”Golden Shower” The other thought the Captain was a massive Wanaka…

Both Costentenus’s companions died trying to escape. The Captain got back to Europe and joined Barnums “New and Greatest Show on Earth” touring America as the Tattooed Man in 1876 earning $100 a day.
